Overview
Nottoway Correctional Center, in Burkeville, is a medium-security prison for men that also serves as a reception and classification center. Many men entering a Virginia state sentence are received here first — given intake assessments, a medical screening, and a security-level classification — before being assigned (often transferred) to a permanent facility, chosen mainly by security level and bed space rather than nearness to home. Beyond intake, Nottoway houses a general-population men’s population, with vocational training (HVAC, horticulture), education, and re-entry programs. A separate Nottoway Work Center operates on the same complex.
What Makes Nottoway Different
- It is a reception/intake center. A newly sentenced man may begin his incarceration here, then be transferred elsewhere — so the first facility is often not the long-term one.
- The 60-day no-visit window. VADOC does not allow visits during the first 60 days of a person’s assignment to a reception center — an important expectation right after sentencing.
- A co-located work center. Confirm whether a person is at Nottoway Correctional Center or the adjacent Nottoway Work Center; they are separate facilities at the same address.
