VADOC's mental-health treatment facility for men, in Marion in far southwest Virginia — providing acute psychiatric and residential care, and co-located with the state psychiatric hospital.

Overview

Marion Correctional Treatment Center is VADOC’s facility providing acute psychiatric and residential mental-health treatment for men in state custody, rather than general-population housing. It opened in 1980 in Marion, alongside the long-standing state psychiatric hospital (the Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute). In 2025 it received a three-year license from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and it is described as the first VADOC facility accredited by the Joint Commission — the same kinds of oversight that apply to civilian behavioral-health hospitals.

What Makes Marion Different

  • It is a treatment facility. Men are placed here for mental-health treatment and stabilization, so day-to-day life and visiting can differ from a standard prison.
  • State behavioral-health oversight. It is licensed by the state behavioral-health authority and accredited by the Joint Commission.
  • Co-located with the state psychiatric hospital. Marion has had a mental-health-care presence for well over a century.
