Overview
Lawrenceville Correctional Center, in Brunswick County, is a medium-security prison for men. Opened in 1998, it was Virginia’s only privately operated state prison — run by a private company, GEO Group, from 2003 — until VADOC assumed operation of it on August 1, 2024. It is now a state-run facility following standard VADOC procedures, and it was chosen as one of the first pilot sites for VADOC’s new ViaPath tablet system in 2026.
What Makes Lawrenceville Different
- It recently changed hands. Families who knew the prison under its private operator should expect VADOC’s procedures now — the centralized online visitor application and scheduler, VADOC mail handling, and VADOC’s phone and tablet systems.
- A tablet pilot site. Lawrenceville was among the first facilities to receive VADOC’s new ViaPath tablets, which changed how calls and messaging work — see the phone and video guide.
- South-central Virginia location. It is off I-85 in Brunswick County, roughly an hour and a half from Richmond.
