Overview
Haynesville Correctional Center, in Richmond County, is a medium-security prison for men (Security Level 2) on Virginia’s Northern Neck — the peninsula between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers. The facility opened in 1993. Because it sits on the Northern Neck, it is geographically isolated from the interstate system; the practical approach is across the Rappahannock at Tappahannock.
A separate facility, the Haynesville Correctional Unit #17, closed on July 1, 2024. This page covers only the Haynesville Correctional Center, the major prison that remains open.
What Makes Haynesville Different
- It is on the Northern Neck. The prison is on a peninsula away from any interstate, so the drive is longer than the mileage alone suggests.
- A closed unit shares the name. The Haynesville Correctional Unit #17 closed on July 1, 2024; older references to a “unit” at Haynesville no longer apply.
- The nearest services are across the river. Tappahannock, about 26 miles away, is the closest hub for fuel, food, and the nearest emergency room.
