Virginia's largest prison, near Jarratt off I-95 — a roughly 3,400-bed men's facility and a medical hub with on-site dialysis and statewide hospice, with video visitation in every housing area.

Overview

Greensville Correctional Center, near Jarratt off I-95, is the largest prison in Virginia — an operational capacity of about 3,400 men, organized into three building clusters. It holds men in security levels 2 and 3 and runs a broad set of programs: a residential substance-use treatment program, adult education and vocational trades, re-entry and cognitive classes, and a Virginia Correctional Enterprises woodworking shop. It also carries a significant medical mission, with an on-site infirmary providing primary care, dialysis, and statewide hospice and total care.

Virginia’s execution chamber was located at Greensville, and executions were carried out here until the state abolished the death penalty in 2021 — the last execution was in 2017, and no executions take place now.

What Makes Greensville Different

  • It is the largest prison in the state. Visiting demand is high, and the prison is organized into several clusters.
  • A medical-care hub. On-site dialysis and statewide hospice mean some men are held here partly for their health-care needs.
  • Video visitation everywhere. Video stations are installed in every housing area, useful for families who cannot make the drive.
