A medium-security men's prison in Capron that is VADOC's facility for aging and medically-needy men — with an assisted-living unit and hospice care, and video visits in every housing area.

Overview

Deerfield Correctional Center, in Capron, is a medium-security prison for men that houses much of VADOC’s aging, infirm, and medically-needy male population. Opened in 1994, it is widely described as the state’s facility for geriatric and assisted-living care, with a dedicated assisted-living unit and hospice care; the facility is single-story and accessible. An associated Men’s Work Center operates at the same complex at a lower security level. Deerfield also takes part in Pixie’s Pen Pals, a program run with the nonprofit FETCH a Cure in which incarcerated men train shelter rescue dogs for adoption.

What Makes Deerfield Different

  • It is VADOC’s facility for older and medically-needy men. An assisted-living unit and hospice serve elderly and seriously ill people — relevant for families of an aging or ill incarcerated person.
  • A shelter-dog program. Incarcerated men train rescue dogs for adoption through Pixie’s Pen Pals.
  • Video visits in every housing area. Video visitation was extended facility-wide in 2024, useful for families who cannot travel to rural Capron or for residents with limited mobility.
