Overview
Buckingham Correctional Center, near Dillwyn, is a large medium-security prison for men, opened in 1982. It holds men across general-population and specialty units — including a veterans pod and an honor pod — and offers a deep slate of programs: education and GED, a Virginia Correctional Enterprises metal shop (welding, design, and manufacturing), substance-use and cognitive programs, re-entry planning, and a canine obedience training program. A separate, lower-security prison, the Dillwyn Correctional Center, sits nearby in the same area; the two are distinct facilities, so confirm which one holds a person.
What Makes Buckingham Different
- It is one of VADOC’s larger men’s prisons, with a broad set of vocational and re-entry programs.
- Vocational and specialty programs. A metal shop, a canine obedience program, and dedicated veterans and honor pods are among its offerings.
- Two prisons, same area. Buckingham and the nearby Dillwyn Correctional Center are separate — using the wrong address or facility name is an easy mistake.
