Overview
Bland Correctional Center, in Bland County, is a multi-custody prison for men at lower security levels (Security Levels 1 and 2). Opened in 1946, it is the oldest of Virginia’s southwestern prisons. The facility has a long-standing agricultural mission: it runs a farm with dairy and meat operations that supplies products to several regional VADOC prisons. Alongside the farm, Bland offers vocational training, education, and re-entry programming.
What Makes Bland Different
- An agricultural/farm mission. Bland operates a working farm, including dairy and meat operations, that supplies food products to several regional VADOC prisons.
- The PUPS service-dog program. Bland is the only VADOC facility hosting the PUPS program, in partnership with Saint Francis Service Dogs, in which men raise and train puppies to become service dogs.
- The oldest of the southwestern prisons. Bland opened in 1946, making it the longest-operating VADOC prison in this part of the state.
