Overview
The Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center is Maine’s minimum-security, pre-release facility for women — those with five years or less left to serve, preparing for release. It opened in Windham in 2017, a purpose-built facility that replaced a leased site in Alfred, and it operates alongside the Maine Correctional Center’s Women’s Center, which holds women at higher custody levels. Programming centers on reentry: education, substance-use treatment, cognitive-behavioral classes, community restitution, and a community work-release program.
What Makes the Reentry Center Different
- It is a women’s pre-release facility. Women here are close to release and may take part in community work release.
- Outside food is allowed in visits. Unlike the rest of the system, the Reentry Center lets visitors bring outside food into the visiting room (in sealed containers, with paper goods and plastic utensils) — confirm the current rules when scheduling.
- Free video visits. The facility is one of Maine’s sites for free Ameelio video, voice, and messaging.
