Call Visiting Office: (207) 893-7109 Info last verified: June 2026Maine's primary reception and classification facility, in Windham near Portland — a rebuilt campus that holds men and, in its Women's Center, most of the state's incarcerated women, with visiting scheduled by housing unit.
Overview
The Maine Correctional Center is the primary reception and classification facility for Maine DOC — the place where most newly sentenced men and women are received and assessed before being assigned a custody level and facility. The campus was rebuilt and opened in 2022, with an official grand opening in 2023, and is organized around assessment on arrival and immediate enrollment in treatment and programs, including substance-use treatment, education and GED, vocational training, and a gardening program. It holds men in medium and minimum custody and, in its Women’s Center, most of the state’s incarcerated women. A separate women’s facility, the Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center, is also in Windham — so families should confirm which of the two (or which unit) holds a person, since visiting differs.
What Makes the Maine Correctional Center Different
- It is Maine’s intake hub. Both men and women are received and classified here before going to their assigned facility.
- It holds women. The Women’s Center is the custodial unit for most incarcerated women in Maine; the Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center, also in Windham, holds women in pre-release.
- It is the most accessible facility. About 22 minutes from Portland, with major hospitals, lodging, and a bus corridor nearby — closer for southern-Maine families than the midcoast or Downeast prisons.

Because the per-unit schedule is posted as a grid that changes, confirm it on the facility’s page or with the visit office. The full approval process is in Visiting in Maine.
