A men's state prison near Angie in Washington Parish, in the southeastern corner of Louisiana near the Mississippi line, with a long-running community-college vocational partnership and a reentry program.

Overview

B.B. “Sixty” Rayburn Correctional Center, near Angie in Washington Parish, opened in 1983 as the Washington Correctional Institute and was renamed in 2006 for Benjamin Bailey “Sixty” Rayburn, a long-serving Louisiana state senator from the area. It is a men’s state prison holding a mix of custody levels, including general-population housing and a segregation unit; DPS&C does not publish the facility’s security level or population on its page.

Rayburn’s most documented programs are a long-running partnership with Northshore Technical Community College — offering trades such as welding, automotive technology, and building technology along with high-school-equivalency classes — and an on-site reentry program that works with people on housing and employment before release.

What Makes Rayburn Different

  • The front gate closes at 2:00 p.m., earlier than the visiting room itself; a visitor who arrives after the gate cutoff is turned away.
  • Thursday has two visit types — contact visits for general population in the afternoon, and non-contact visits for restricted-status people in the morning.
  • It is in the far southeastern corner of the state, near the Mississippi line, reached from New Orleans across the Causeway.
  • Its education partnership with Northshore Technical Community College spans decades of vocational and academic programming.
