Call Visiting Office: (225) 319-2701 Info last verified: June 2026Louisiana's only women's prison — a rebuilt facility at St. Gabriel that reopened in 2025 after the original flooded in 2016, holding all custody levels including the women's death row.
Overview
The Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women is the state’s only prison for women, and it was rebuilt after a long displacement. The prior facility in St. Gabriel flooded in August 2016 and was evacuated, and for nine years the state’s women were dispersed to temporary sites — chiefly the former Jetson youth center near Baker, and a private facility in Tallulah. A rebuilt, $160 million LCIW opened on a new footprint at St. Gabriel in August 2025, engineered against future flooding, and the women have been consolidated back to it. The new campus includes dormitories, a medical building, education and vocational space, and a postpartum unit for women who give birth in custody. LCIW holds every custody level, is the reception point for women entering the state system, and houses the state’s female death row.
What Makes LCIW Different
- It is the state’s only women’s prison, so any woman serving a Louisiana state sentence in a state facility is here.
- It reopened in 2025. The population has moved back to St. Gabriel from the temporary Jetson site in Baker, and procedures at a new facility are still settling.
- Visiting depends on custody level, including a separate schedule for death row — the women’s death row is here, not at Angola.
- Pregnancy care is on site. Louisiana law sharply limits restraints on a pregnant woman — none during labor, delivery, transport, or postpartum recovery, and no waist restraints in those situations.
