A medium- and minimum-security state prison for men near La Grange, in Oldham County, that serves as Kentucky's statewide Assessment and Classification Center, where newly committed male state prisoners are processed before assignment.

Overview

Roederer Correctional Complex is a medium- and minimum-security state prison for men near La Grange, in Oldham County, north-central Kentucky. In addition to housing a general population, it serves as the Kentucky Department of Corrections’ statewide Assessment and Classification Center, where newly committed male state prisoners are received, evaluated, and classified before being assigned to a long-term institution. The complex also includes substance-abuse treatment beds and a working farm operation. It is operated by the Kentucky Department of Corrections (KY DOC).

What Makes the Roederer Correctional Complex Different

Roederer is Kentucky’s reception point for men entering the state prison system. Since May 1, 1989, it has been the Department of Corrections’ Assessment and Classification Center for incoming state prisoners: with the exception of those sentenced to death, every newly committed male state prisoner is processed and classified at Roederer before being assigned to a permanent institution. During this intake stage, staff assess each person and determine a custody level, facility assignment, and program eligibility. Because of this role, many men housed at Roederer are there temporarily and are later transferred to another prison.

Roederer is one of three state prisons in or near La Grange, in Oldham County. The Kentucky State Reformatory and the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex are also in the area: the Reformatory is a long-established medium-security men’s prison, and Luther Luckett is an adjacent medium-security men’s prison with treatment and psychiatric programming. Roederer is the reception and assessment center. Because the three are close together and share the La Grange location, families should confirm which facility a person is in on the Kentucky Offender Online Lookup (KOOL) before traveling.
