Menard Correctional Center, at Chester in Randolph County, southern Illinois, on the Mississippi River, is one of Illinois’s oldest (opened 1878) and largest maximum-security prisons for men. It also has a reception and classification unit for some men entering custody in the southern part of the state. As a maximum-security facility, it has more restrictive visiting than lower-security prisons, and some housing may be non-contact.
